Ishmael Ensemble
1st Release: 4th April 2021 2nd Release: 23rd November 2022
In partnership with Jazz Stroud
2017 saw Ishmael Ensemble’s debut EP, Songs for Knotty, followed by a remix for Detroit techno demigod Carl Craig. These formative steps became a sprint in 2018, as a string of 7”s entitled Severn Songs began flowing out across the year. The Bristol-inspired records variously bridged fleet-footed jazz, lush downtempo, modulated electronica, Fourth World tones, and all manner of stirring sonic swells.
It’s no surprise the records caught the attention of tastemakers & DJs across the board, receiving regular radio play on BBC6Music, Jazz FM & Worldwide FM plus a performance on Gilles Peterson’s U.K. Jazz Special live from the legendary Maida Vale Studios. Tiptoeing between the current British jazz boom and Bristol's rich musical ancestry, the group have found a truly unique and refreshing voice.
Yelfis Valdes will be the first in a series of broadcasts from Jazz Stroud’s main venue, featuring Al MacSween - keys, Ernesto Marichales - drums, Marcus Mcneish - bass

1st Release: Tuesday 21st February 2021 2nd Release: 30th November 2022
In partnership with Jazz Stroud
Yelfris is a Cuban artist, composer and trumpet player, who mixes the latest electronic technics with the spiritual chants and mystic rhythms from the Orishas.
Over lockdown, we decided to come together and create an environment at The Goods Shed for the round performance using d&b audiotechnik soundscape but with the addition of a central cluster, inspired by @alabaster de plumes peach nights and Church of sound. Funded through PRS and supported by SVA this was our way of supporting some of the artists that we have worked with in the past and building new relationships with artists we admire. We avoided the live streaming root and have gone for an emphasis on the craft of film and sound, we’re pretty pleased and hyped with the results.

ISHMAEL ENSEMBLE

Multi-instrumentalist and producer Pete Cunningham, aka Ishmael, sees himself as being on the fringes of UK jazz and electronic music. As a saxophonist, he leads the Ishmael Ensemble, experimental jazzwise electronica, inspired by the Bristol sound, smooth club grooves and swirling electro expanses, above which the soulful vocals appear suspended. The blend of urban beats, jazz idiom and trip-hop heritage almost inadvertently envelops the listener in a smoky after-hours atmosphere. Performing live with the band is singer Holly Wellington, aka Holysseus Fly.
