Footshooter Presents: Sawa-Manga, Brother Portrait & Footshooter (Live set)

  • SVA, 4 John Street GL5 2HA United Kingdom (map)

Footshooter is the production moniker used by London-based musician Barney Whittaker. His style explores grooves and rhythms spanning UK dance music with the melodic vibrations of jazz and soul, blending these with spoken word poetry, rapping and vocals from artists in the London scene.

Cutting his teeth over the past few years warming up for acts such as Yussef Kamaal, Andrew Ashong and Alfa Mist in Brighton and London, Footshooter's latest release on Famous Friends Records, “Strange Days EP”, has caught the attention of the likes of Bonobo, who dropped the opening track in a recent Boiler Room set in NYC.

His live set features vocalists Brother Portrait, Slam The Poet, Izzy Risk & And Is Phi, and involves extended improvised versions of his tracks to keep it fresh and exciting, so two performances will never be the same.

Sawa-Manga is a new project of collaboration between writer/vocalist And Is Phi and producer and beatsmith D'vo. It is an exploration of musical landscapes, of deep sea diving into liminal places for story telling. It is sway, funk, blue flame.

Having played at Brainchild Festival 2017 in East Sussex, and with an upcoming gig fronting a tribute night to Erykah Badu at Camden's Jazz Cafe and another performance in the pipeline at new Peckham music venue Ghostnotes, they are bringing fresh, forward-thinking yet soulful performances to the table.

Their live performance comprises of vocalist And Is Phi, D'vo on buttons and harpist Marysia Osuchowska combining to make a sound that blends astral beats rooted in hip-hop with buoyant soundscapes and soul-inflected vocal flourishes.

Brother Portrait is a writer/rhymer/artist - his words falling into form in poetry, prose, travel writing and music. He's a believer in the importance of cultural production and archiving experience for understanding expression and sense of self.

A key figure and wordsmith in the south-east London music scene, Brother Portrait has performed with the Black/Other crew, as well as joining James Massiah and And Is Phi in the New Funk Poets. Now he focusses on his solo material, and his recent release 'Navigate: In Limbo' explores concepts of identity and self in the shadow of daily struggles.

Joined by D'vo on the buttons, Portrait's live show channels the energy from his recordings and brings them to life, blending politically charged wordplay with lean, funk-infused beats.
